Few words, in French

Once upon a time, there was a piece of wood…

The incredible adventures of Pinocchio have enchanted audiences for generations and are still very much relevant today. The story is a metaphor for how mistakes can also play a part in shaping us as human beings.

Mistakes are not necessarily bad; they are often the only way we can learn to understand ourselves better and change our lives. As the Italian writer Gianni Rodari once said, “Mistakes are necessary, beneficial like bread, and often beautiful—just look at the Tower of Pisa.”

This adaptation of Pinocchio explores the origins of the puppet, from the time when it is no more than a raw material—a block of wood—before the artist gives it form and brings it to life.

In a carpentry workshop unlike any other, pieces of wood at different stages of the shaping process come to life as we discover the humans and animals who tell this timeless story.

Pinocchio sets off on a journey, and with him we explore different approaches to puppetry.

Company

Puppet Theatre Maribor was founded in December 1973, working out of a space above the municipal library. Festival programmers were quick to recognize the quality of their performances and the company has since been presenting its shows around the world. In the fall of 2010, Puppet Theatre Maribor moved into the newly renovated Minorite monastery in Maribor’s historical Lent neighbourhood.

The company’s repertoire targets both youth and adult audiences and focuses on exploring puppetry arts’ many traditional and modern approaches. The company also offers a wide variety of educational activities and professional training workshops that help raise the bar for contemporary creation.

Since 1988, Puppet Theatre Maribor has been organizing the Summer Puppet Pier international puppet festival. And since 2011, it has been hosting major productions presented during the Biennial of the Puppetry Artists Institution of Slovenia.

Puppet Theatre Maribor is a modern and dynamic puppet centre dedicated to the development and recognition of puppetry arts.

In 2015, Casteliers hosted their show The Trial or The Woeful Story of Joseph K., in partnership with Théâtre Aux Écuries.
