This timeless composition is a savoury combination of music and puppetry that mercilessly places the audience in the role of the accused, Joseph K. The audience finds itself trapped in a suffocating social machine and experiences the accused’s hopelessness in real-time along with some of the people he holds nearest and dearest.
A rare performance that combines dark humour, poetry, hand puppets, and objects… and even offers a few wacky musical moments! The Trial is directed by Slovenian prodigy Matija Solce, an actor, musician, puppeteer, teacher, and performer. The 34-year-old artist has created a performance that simply never lets up: both the audience and the performers are energized from beginning to end!
THE TRIAL was awarded the GRAND PRIZE at the 7th edition of the Puppetry Artists Institution of Slovenia Biennale in 2013.

Puppet Theatre Maribor was founded in December 1973, where they set up shop above the municipal library. Festival programmers were quick to recognize the quality of their performance and the company has since been preforming across every continent (except for Australia). In the fall of 2010, Puppet Theatre Maribor moved into the newly renovated Minorite monastery in Maribor’s Lent neighbourhood.
The company’s repertoire targets both youth and adult audiences and focuses on exploring puppetry arts’ many traditional and modern approaches. The company also offers a wide variety of educational activities and professional training workshops that help raise the bar for contemporary creation.
Since 1988, Puppet Theatre Maribor has been organizing the Summer Puppet Pier international puppet festival. And since 2011, it has been hosting major productions presented during the Biennial of the Puppetry Artists Institution of Slovenia. Puppet Theatre Maribor is a modern and dynamic puppet centre dedicated to the development and recognition of puppetry arts.
