A Théâtre Aux Écuries and Casteliers co-presentation

In French

Mononk Jules, a documentary theatre show and literary essay, picks up some of the pieces of the little-known history of the Indigenous peoples, the one that has never been taught. Jocelyn Sioui pulls on the threads of the story of Jules Sioui, his great-uncle, one of the greatest First Nations heroes of the twentieth century, who fell into a huge memory hole. Jules Sioui’s fight will lead him to the point of sacrifice: a hunger strike with the goal of the independence of the Indigenous peoples. Surrounded by screens and animated maquettes, Jocelyn Sioui takes us into a box of archives from which we emerge fundamentally changed.

Running time: 2h50 minutes

Techniques:  Object and shadow theatre, acting

Company

Jocelyn Sioui, founder of Belzébrute band de théâtre, has written, designed, and performed works such as Shavirez and Mr. P. His originality has been recognized with several awards, including the 2013 OFF/Festival M.T.M. Jury Prize. He is also the founder of the OUF! Festival Off Casteliers, a puppetry festival that has become a must for Canadian puppeteers. Mononk Jules launches a new cycle of creative work, which takes Jocelyn back to his indigenous roots. He is convinced that in order to bridge the gap between aboriginal people and Canadians, we need to reconnect with our histories.
